Hi, I'm Gill I am a psychodynamic counsellor . It means I am interested to discover how childhood experiences affect our lives now. Sometimes we feel fearful or angry without really understanding why or where the feelings belong. We try to ignore such feelings because they are uncomfortable and we have got used to masking them over the years but they can suddenly surge up catching us unawares. If this has happened to you, you might want to look at it more closely.
We begin by making sure our counselling communications are private and safe. It’s important that you feel free to say what you want and not to worry that other people might read it. We exchange thoughts and expectations about online counselling (what it can and what it cannot do). Then, when you are ready, I encourage you to write about the feelings that catch you unawares which are so painful and difficult now. I don’t judge what you say, I’m on your side trying to see the world through your eyes.
In order to understand where these difficult feelings might have begun, I encourage you to write about the experiences in your childhood that were important for you and together we try to understand how they affect you today. Then we can look at how you might change things and be different in the future.
My type of counselling is like a journey where the signposts are feelings. It’s a journey we make together. You’re not on your own when the going gets tough. Because everything is written down (and online you can also use pictures, poems or music to describe how you feel), you can alter it and add to it until it is complete. When counselling ends, you will have a record of the work we have done together, which you can return to as often as you wish.
